Emma Ríos (born 1976 in Vilagarcía de Arousa, Pontevedra, Spain) is a Spanish comics artist who has worked in both the European and American comics markets.

Life and Career

Rios was an Architecture Major from the University of Coruña, the city in which she lives. She started getting into the world of comics doing short stories for a large number of fanzines and, particularly, self-publishing her comic book series APB (A Prueba de Balas) [Bulletproof] through the collective known as Polaqia. Also in Spain she published short stories in the magazine Dos Veces Breve (Two Times Brief) and the anthology Los Reyes Elfos: Historia de Faerie 2 (The Elf Kings: History of Faerie 2). Her wish to dedicate herself profesionally to comics allowed her to leave her work as an architect and work on comics full-time after receiving a job offer from Boom! Studios in 2008. Because of this proposal, she ended up being the penciller of Hexed, a supernatural-themed miniseries that became her debut in the U.S. market and her first work of such a wide distribution.

Her career seems to march at a steady rythym, meanwhile, in Spain, SM publishes a book called Amadís de Gaula, a Ricardo Gómez written adaptation of the cavarly novel of the same title, featuring pencils and color from Emma Ríos. Her first major work for Marvel Comics was the Dr. Strange limited series written by Mark Waid (Strange). Her artwork had also appeared in such titles as Runaways, Amazing Spider-Man, and Girl Comics. She is currently drawing the miniseries Osborn, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Ríos is self-taught in the language of comics, and she has been influenced by both manga and other European and American artists such as Frederick Peeters and Paul Pope.
