Weshoyot Alvitre

Weshoyot Alvitre (June 24, 1984) is a Tongva/Scots-Gaelic artist from California.

Life and Career[]

Alvitre was born in Newbury Park, California. Her first name means "two stars" in the Tongva language.^[1] She grew up at Satwiwa, a Tongva cultural center founded and run by her father located in the Santa Monica Mountains. Her mother was a librarian, and she was first drawn to art in children's books. She was introduced to comics when she ordered The Little Mermaid and Beauty & the Beast graphic novel adaptations from a school catalog. She attended Ventura High School until her junior year. She lost her entire art porfolio in a fire at VHS, which destroyed the entire art room. She then transfered to an independent study program. This allowed her to take community college classes to focus on her art education and rebuilding her portfolio. She attended Ventura College, majoring in art and transfered to University Channel Islands, located on site of the Camarillo State Hospial. She graduated in 2007 with a BA in fine arts.

She started her career in comics on Alias Comic's Tenth Muse as an inker, and quickly moved on to penciling issue #11 of Tenth Muse. Weshoyot penciled and inked issues 10-12 of Archaic, which is published by Fenickx Productions LLC. She also is credited with the back cover of issue #3 of The Misadventures of Clark and Jefferson from Ape Entertainment, a pin-up of "Spaceboy" from issue #6 of Gerard Way's Umbrella Acamdemy from Dark Horse Comics, a pin-up chapter break from the TPB of Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa from Maw Productions.

Most recently is her contribution to a variant cover for IDW Publishing Satellite Falling #2 (June 2016), cover interview and interior art for ROSEBUD Magazine #61 (June/July 2016), cover and interior to HEDERSLEBEN's album "The Fall of Chronopolis", Locust Moon Press's LITTLE NEMO: Dream Another Dream (Nov 2014), Once Upon A Time Machine (2012) for Dark Horse, and Graphic Classics Vol. 24: Native American Classics (2013).

She has also contributed design work to Dooney and Bourke handbags after winning a competition sponsored by Teen Vogue magazine. During her senior year in college she also created her own line of luxury handbags.

She lists Leinil Yu, David Mack, Bill Sienkiewicz and J. Scott Campbell amongst her influences, in addition to Victorian illustrators, art nouveau and deco fine art.
